President Donald Trump is contemplating a travel ban that would impact 43 countries; however, Nigeria, recognized as Africa's largest economy, is conspicuously not included in this list.

A report from Reuters, referencing an internal memo, indicates that the proposed travel restrictions categorize countries into three tiers: red, orange, and yellow. The red category comprises 11 nations—Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Cuba, Bhutan, Venezuela, North Korea, Yemen, and Somalia—whose citizens would be entirely prohibited from entering the United States. The orange category includes 10 countries, such as Russia, Belarus, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Pakistan, where access to visas would be heavily limited. The yellow category features 22 nations, including Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe. These countries are given a 60-day period to address U.S. concerns before potentially facing restrictions. While numerous African nations are listed, significant economies like Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, and Egypt are notably absent. Conversely, three Caribbean nations—Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia—are included in the yellow category. These countries are recognized for their citizenship-by-investment programs, which have attracted scrutiny from the EU due to associated security concerns. In 2023, the EU expressed alarm over 'golden passports' after it was revealed that Caribbean nations had issued citizenship to 88,000 individuals from countries such as Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and China. Dominica, with a population of 70,000, had issued 34,500 passports, while St. Kitts and Nevis, home to 48,000 residents, had distributed 36,700. A U.S. official has indicated that the proposal for the travel ban is still under consideration and may be subject to change. This initiative is part of Trump's wider immigration enforcement strategy, which commenced at the beginning of his second term in January.
