South Korea has sent a delegation to Canada, aiming to establish itself as a reliable supplier of military hardware and equipment.

This information was reported by the Ottawa Citizen.

The South Korean government is presenting Canada with a variety of new military equipment options, showcasing its capability to deliver advanced defense systems promptly and reinforcing its status as a trustworthy ally.

This initiative arises in light of recent actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, which include halting military supplies to Ukraine and making threats regarding Canada, prompting American allies globally to reassess their security strategies.

A delegation comprising twelve officials from South Korea's defense sector and government visited Ottawa on March 5 and 6, proposing to supply the Canadian Forces with an array of new equipment, such as howitzers, training aircraft, rocket launchers, and submarines.

The proposal included assurances of substantial advantages for Canadian industry along with a secure supply chain.

Retired South Korean Admiral Steve Jeong, Vice President of Hanwha Ocean, stated that the KSS-III submarine currently under production by the company fulfills all of Canada's specifications. Furthermore, the initial delivery could occur within six years following the signing of the contract.

The company also extended similar submarine offers to the Polish Navy in 2023.

Maintenance facilities would be established in Canada, and unlike U.S. weapon systems, South Korea would grant Canada complete access to the onboard technology.

Hanwha has commenced forming partnerships with Canadian companies to explore potential collaboration on the proposal.

Reports indicate that South Korea has established a robust defense industry in response to escalating costs and unreasonable demands associated with American-made equipment.

"We encountered similar issues with the Americans. Our navy's capabilities were heavily reliant on American support, yet the prices continued to increase. This led to our dissatisfaction, prompting us to pursue independent development," Jeong remarked.

As previously noted, U.S. allies, including those within the Five Eyes alliance and other significant partners, are contemplating a reduction in intelligence sharing with Washington due to concerns regarding a potential shift in U.S. policy towards Russia.
