Hamas has announced an agreement with Israel to release over 600 Palestinian prisoners, resolving a recent impasse that threatened the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. The deadlock arose when Israel delayed the release, citing concerns over public ceremonies held by Hamas during previous exchanges, which Israel viewed as humiliating. In response, Hamas agreed to deliver the bodies of four deceased Israeli hostages in exchange for the prisoners' release. This exchange, facilitated by Egyptian mediators, is expected to occur imminently. The initial phase of the ceasefire, established on January 19, involved the exchange of 33 Israeli hostages, both living and deceased, for approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. The successful completion of this latest agreement paves the way for further negotiations aimed at releasing remaining hostages and potentially ending the ongoing conflict.
