 Photograph taken in 1909 by Northcote Thomas  at Sabongida  Ora, Edo  (Evbiobe-Ora) people, showing a chief  dressed in elaborate war  dress, proudly holding a  magnificent "Danish rifle".
The Kingdom of Benin was the first in West Africa to  acquire firearms through trade with Europeans and played a crucial role in  integrating these new weapons into its military tactics.
