His  shot to keep England alive was  his  first  shot  on target of the  game.

England  will not  ultimately  mind  as it was  work  done but there is surely a limit to how  many  times  they can  complicate  their  lives  before they get  out  of  a  jam.|

Saka's  goal was  reward for  an  outstanding  performance  while Aston  Villa's  Ezri Konsa was impeccable in defence as  a  replacement  for  the  suspended Marc Guehi.|

Kobbie Mainoo also  shone  in midfield but it remains a mystery why  such  an  attacking  England  team  have  looked  so  helpless  for so  long,  something Southgate will have to  sort  out  before  the  semi-finals.|

For now,  though,  England can  be  delighted  to  stay  alive at Euro 2024  despite  their  nerves  as Southgate  guides  them  to  the  semi-finals  of a major tournament  again.|

England's  penalty-taking  skills  were  on  display

England manager Southgate was so confident  he  took  captain and  penalty  expert Harry Kane  off  with 11 minutes  to  go.|

Kane,  off the pace throughout,  took  a heavy knock  and  then  fell  awkwardly  in  the dugout before Southgate  brought  Toney  on.

Toney's  penalty-taking  experience  was  put  to  the  test  in the Premier League for Brentford, so when it came to penalties, Southgate had an impressive group to  secure  a  place  in  the  semi-finals  and the striker did not  disappoint.

Palmer,  dubbed  'cool'  Palmer for his  brave  12-yard  tackle  against  Chelsea,  got  England on  track  before Bellingham, Saka,  the  Arsenal  penalty  taker  and Toney set the stage for  Alexander-Arnold.

For Saka, it was a moment of redemption after  saving  the  decisive  last-gasp  penalty  at Wembley three years ago as Italy beat England to win the last European Championship final on  penalties.

It will give Southgate a  sense  of security in these  difficult  situations to  be  able  to  turn  to  these  specialists.
