The Calgary Police Service is gearing up to assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with security efforts for the upcoming 2025 G7 Summit in Kananaskis. The summit, scheduled to take place in June 2025, will bring together leaders from Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom to discuss pressing global issues.

According to David Hall, event director and chief superintendent of the Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG), the RCMP is leading the security efforts, with the Calgary Police Service and other partners playing a supporting role ¹. The ISSG is responsible for overall security at the summit, and Hall emphasized the importance of collaboration between agencies to ensure a safe and secure event.

The security planning process is already underway, with lessons learned from previous summits, including the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis, being incorporated into the planning process ¹. Hall noted that the 2002 event was very different from the one being planned for 2025, but the experience gained from hosting that event is informing the current planning efforts.

The Calgary Police Service and other partners will be responsible for various aspects of security, including motorcade support, transportation, and processing of individuals charged with crimes (if needed) ¹. The Canadian Armed Forces will also be involved in the security efforts.

To minimize the impact on the local community, a community relations team will be established to address concerns and maintain dialogue with area residents and businesses ¹. The team will work closely with local partners, including First Nations communities, to ensure that their concerns are heard and addressed.

The 2025 G7 Summit is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the Calgary region and Alberta as a whole ¹. A pre-event economic impact study estimated that the summit could yield up to $193.1 million for the Calgary region and up to $243.5 million in economic benefits for Alberta's economy.
