A Canadian woman who imports drugs into Nigeria is sentenced to 11 years in pris

Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian national, was given an 11-year prison sentence by a Federal High Court in Lagos for bringing 74 packages of Canadian Loud, a strong synthetic cannabis strain, into Nigeria.

Earlier this month, investigators seized the substance, which weighed 35.20 kg in total.

Following her apprehension by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on October 3, 2024, Munju was found guilty.

She was caught at the airport's "D" Arrival Hall while passengers arriving on a KLM flight were being routinely vetted.

Munju was charged with two counts of drug trafficking at her Wednesday court appearance.

She was found guilty and sentenced after entering a guilty plea to both counts.

Justice Dipeolu sentenced Munju to six years in prison on count one and five years on count two after taking into account the allocutus that the defendant's attorney had submitted.

The judge did, however, offer the convicted party a fine of N50 million for each of the two offences, for a total of N100 million.

In contrast, she stated in her testimony after being arrested that she was enlisted via an internet platform to traffic the illegal shipment in exchange for $10,000 Canadian dollars upon its successful delivery in Lagos.

She claimed that she needed the money to pay for her master's program in Canada, so she accepted the offer.
