330 workers at Canada Revenue Agency are let off due to CERB claims during epidemic

OTTAWA In its final report on an internal assessment, the Canada Revenue Agency reports that it has fired 330 workers for improperly receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit during the pandemic.

Following the start of an internal inquiry by the CRA in June 2023, 600 employees who had received CERB benefits while being ineligible for them were flagged for additional scrutiny.



The program, dubbed CERB for short, gave Canadians who lost their jobs due to public health restrictions during the epidemic $2,000 a month.

According to the agency, 185 people who took CERB were not fired, but 40 of them did face disciplinary measures including suspension.

135 employees, on the other hand, were judged to be qualified for CERB and were spared any repercussions.

A few workers would have qualified due to their status as interns or temporary workers.

The CRA says employees who unlawfully received CERB are liable to give back the benefits they received.

According to the organization, it will take longer to finish a tiny number of ongoing cases, such as those involving workers who are on medical or prolonged unpaid absence.
