The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's major crimes unit has launched an investigation into the death of a person whose burned body was discovered early Wednesday by emergency responders on the side of a road east of Calgary. Authorities suspect that the individual may have been the victim of a homicide, though an autopsy set to be conducted in Calgary on Thursday is expected to provide further insights.

The gruesome discovery was made around 1:35 a.m. on Township Road 233, near Highway 791, after a passerby reported seeing a fire at the location. By the time officers arrived, the fire had already extinguished itself, but what remained was the body, which had apparently been burning in a ditch. The RCMP noted that no vehicle was present at the scene, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding the death.

In a news release, the RCMP asked the public for assistance, specifically requesting dash-camera footage from anyone who had been in the area between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Police are particularly interested in drivers who were traveling on Highway 560, west of the Glenmore and Stoney Trail overpass, during that timeframe.

The RCMP spokesperson emphasized that investigators believe the incident was a targeted attack and assured the public that there is no broader danger at this time. Nevertheless, police are urging anyone with information to contact the Strathmore RCMP detachment or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
