After pushing the idea at the 2024 Energy Council Annual Meeting, Minister of Affordability and Utilities Nathan Neudorf released the following statement regarding Alberta's hydrogen market👇.

The globe is looking to hydrogen as a means of drastically cutting emissions in sectors that are difficult to mitigate. By 2050, the global hydrogen market is predicted to be worth up to $11 trillion, and Alberta is already establishing itself as a dominant player. Alberta possesses the necessary resources, business-friendly climate, and knowledge to gain a competitive edge, being the country's largest producer of hydrogen.

In addition to Alberta Innovates, Emission Reduction Alberta, and the Alberta Petrochemical Incentive Program, we are funding over 100 new hydrogen projects throughout the province with hundreds of millions of dollars through this. This includes initiatives like the $2 billion clean hydrogen production facility being built by Linde, the Path2Zero project by Dow, the fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles at Edmonton International Airport, hydrogen filling stations, and more.

In addition to financing, Alberta's vast network of natural gas utilities offers a special chance for hydrogen. In order to better integrate hydrogen throughout the utilities sector, our government is investigating possible policy alternatives and legal reforms. With the goal of bringing additional legislative clarification by the next spring session, we are actively consulting.
