Man accused of assisting eight foreign people in entering Manitoba illegally from the United States

Following reports late last month of eight migrants from various parts of Africa being observed illegally crossing the Manitoba-U.S. border, the RCMP said a Somali resident of Winnipeg has been charged with human smuggling.

According to a news release issued by the police on Monday, Abshir Mohamed Osman, 35, was accused after they discovered him operating a rental car near the Gretna, Manitoba, port of entry for the Canada Border Services Agency on August 22 with eight African nationals inside.

According to authorities, the migrants, who range in age from 19 to 48, are from Sudan, Guinea, and Chad. The Customs Act led to their arrest.


According to police, Osman is a native of Somalia and resides in Winnipeg. He was set free with a few restrictions and is expected to be up in Emerson Provincial Court on October 16 following reports late last month that eight migrants from different parts of Africa were seen entering Manitoba illegally, the RCMP announced that a Winnipeg resident who is Somali has been charged with human smuggling.
