In a harrowing incident that has shaken the community, two young men from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) lost their lives at Burleigh Falls yesterday evening. The tragedy began when a 24-year-old man from Caledon and a 26-year-old man from Brampton were reported missing in the water around 5:00 p.m.

Witnesses recounted the distressing moments when the first man fell into the water from the shoreline and appeared to be in trouble. Without hesitation, others jumped into the lake to assist, unfortunately resulting in the second man also being swept away. Despite immediate emergency response and a thorough search conducted by local authorities, the pair remained missing until today.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit took over the search efforts this morning, locating and recovering the bodies of both men. The incident has prompted a renewed call for boater safety and awareness. The OPP highlighted that capsized vessels and falling overboard are the leading causes of boating-related fatalities annually.

As the warm weather invites more people to enjoy Ontario's waterways, it is imperative to understand the risks and take the necessary precautions. The importance of wearing a life jacket or personal floatation device cannot be overstated, as it can significantly improve the chances of survival in such emergencies.

The OPP is dedicated to enhancing boater education and enforcing marine laws to ensure the safety of all individuals enjoying the province's waterways. The force urges all water enthusiasts to be responsible and aware of their surroundings while on the water, to avoid similar heartbreaking outcomes.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the two men whose lives were tragically cut short. This event underscores the critical need for vigilance and the adoption of safe boating practices to prevent future tragedies from occurring.
