In just a few weeks, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the largest hydroelectric facility on the continent, will be officially inaugurated. The construction of this monumental project has spanned over a decade and cost nearly $5 billion. The GERD is projected to generate approximately 5,150 megawatts of electricity, producing an annual energy output of 15,760 gigawatt hours—effectively doubling Ethiopia's energy capacity. Additionally, the dam will enhance the country's ability to export energy to neighboring nations, promoting greater regional integration and interconnectedness.
