Excessive Delays. Heightened Risks. It's Time to Construct Firehall 3. 🚨

The Calgary Firefighters Association is expressing their frustration over the ongoing delays in the construction of Firehall 3 in Inglewood.


Initially, the land was purchased in 2009, but despite various approvals and allocations, the project has encountered numerous delays, primarily due to disagreements between the City and the developer. The fire service's integration within the Community Services department has also been highlighted as a potential issue contributing to the slow decision-making process. With the current Fire Station 1 handling an overwhelming number of calls and the city's growing population, there's a pressing need for additional firefighting resources in the area.

The timeline of delays includes:
- Pre-application and land use process from 2020 to 2023
- Land Use approval in January 2023
- Development permit submission in September 2023
- Indefinite hold from Q3 2023 to Q2 2024
- Construction initially scheduled for Q2 2025 but now delayed again

Fire Chief Steve Dongworth acknowledges the strategies in place haven't worked and is looking to move forward with the project. However, the complex bureaucratic structure within the City of Calgary has hindered progress. Councillors Sonya Sharp and Andre Chabot are advocating for an independent review of the City's realignment to address the persistent silos between departments and to ensure that critical infrastructure projects like Firehall 3 are prioritized and executed efficiently.

The Association is urging the City to break ground and build Firehall 3 to meet the growing needs of the community.
