Investigation Underway After Police-Involved Shooting in Scarborough

A police-involved shooting incident occurred in Scarborough on Thursday evening, resulting in one person being shot by York Regional Police. The incident began in Markham, where police initially spotted a suspected stolen vehicle near Kennedy Road and Clayton Drive. The vehicle was subsequently followed by police and eventually drove into Toronto, prompting officers to attempt to stop it in the area of Kennedy Road and Bonis Avenue.

According to York Regional Police, during the interaction, at least one officer discharged their firearm, striking the lone male occupant in the vehicle. The injured individual was taken to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries. Toronto paramedics reported transporting a person with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately, no police officer was injured in the incident. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that result in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

York Regional Police are cooperating fully with the SIU investigation and will provide further updates as more information becomes available. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and complexities involved in police work, and the importance of thorough investigations to ensure accountability and transparency.
