The recent news of mass terminations of senior EMS management in Edmonton and the province of Alberta is a stark reminder of the deep-seated issues plaguing our emergency medical services system. This is the second such round of terminations in less than a year, and it comes as no surprise to those on the front lines of healthcare delivery. The reality is that Alberta's EMS system is in a state of disarray, and the situation continues to deteriorate with each passing day.

Despite promises to revamp healthcare in a mere 90 days, very little has changed since November 2024. The harsh truth is that our emergency departments are overflowing, hospitals are bursting at the seams, and paramedics are either quitting or getting injured at an alarming rate. The ambulance service is struggling to keep up with the increasing volume of 911 calls, and our dispatchers are forced to triage calls, deciding which emergency warrants the limited resources available.

Healthcare workers, including paramedics, have been clamoring for increased funding and resources to expand capacity, as well as a fair contract to attract and retain skilled professionals in this province. Instead, the system has been ravaged by hasty decisions, and it seems that those in charge are making it up as they go along. Paramedics are left in the dark, unsure of what organization they work for or what direction we're headed.

Today's announcement is yet another blow to the already-fragile EMS system. It is a stark reminder that our pleas for assistance have fallen on deaf ears. The government would have you believe that everything is fine and that things are improving, but this is a blatant lie. The only change that's happening is the destruction of a system designed to provide care to Albertans in their most vulnerable moments.

As Edmonton paramedics, we are angry and frustrated with the current state of affairs. We have no leadership, no organization, no plan, no ambulances, no manpower, and no contract. Meanwhile, the government seems to think that our biggest issue is the lack of a logo. This is a gross misrepresentation of the crisis we face.

Our message to the government is clear: stop the senseless and destructive reorganization of healthcare, and actually listen to healthcare workers. It's time to invest in expanding healthcare capacity in this province, to properly serve Albertans. We deserve better. It's time for accountability, action, and a genuine commitment to fixing the EMS system.

The people of Alberta deserve a healthcare system that is reliable, efficient, and compassionate. As paramedics, we are committed to providing the best possible care to our patients, but we need the support and resources to do so. It's time for the government to stop making empty promises and take concrete steps to address the crisis in our EMS system. The people of Alberta are counting on it.
