Rwanda's Aviation Ambitions Take Flight with Qatar Airways Partnership

In a significant development for Rwanda's aviation sector, the East African nation is collaborating with Qatar Airways to construct the state-of-the-art Bugesera International Airport, located approximately 40 kilometers from Kigali. This strategic partnership is set to transform Rwanda into a central hub for aviation in Africa, providing unparalleled connectivity to the region.

Phased Development and Capacity Expansion

The airport's first phase, slated for completion by 2028, will have an annual capacity of 8 million passengers. In a subsequent phase, the capacity will be increased to 14 million passengers per year by 2032. To accelerate the construction process, Rwanda has allocated $499 million in its 2025/26 budget, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the planned completion date.

Qatar Airways' Investment and Expansion Plans

As part of its strategy to expand within Africa, recognized as one of the fastest-growing markets, Qatar Airways will hold a 60% stake in the new airport. Additionally, the airline is poised to acquire 49% of RwandAir, Rwanda's national carrier. This partnership will grant RwandAir access to 65 destinations worldwide, a significant increase from its current 25 destinations.

This initiative is poised to elevate Rwanda's status as a key aviation hub in East Africa, fostering economic growth and development in the region. As Rwanda strengthens its ties with Qatar Airways, the country is set to benefit from increased tourism, trade, and investment opportunities, solidifying its position as a gateway to the African continent.
