Mexico prepared for Trump's mass deportations, but they never took place.

When President Donald Trump committed to initiating the "largest deportation operation in American history," this border city promptly took action. The local government announced a state of emergency. Federal authorities constructed a facility capable of accommodating up to 2,600 deportees, featuring beds, showers, and chefs in white coats.

It was, as one local official described, the "zombie apocalypse scenario."

However, five months after Trump assumed office, the shelter is almost vacant. The number of deportees arriving has been so low — averaging 38 per day — that one of the two floors has been closed off.
