The Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) in Sydney is a beacon of hope and progress in the fight against asbestosis, silicosis, and mesothelioma. These diseases, primarily caused by exposure to asbestos and silica dust, continue to claim thousands of lives in Australia and beyond. As the Patron, the Governor-General and Mr Beckett SC recently visited the institute to show their support and engage with the tireless efforts of the multidisciplinary team.

The team at ADDRI is comprised of researchers, clinicians, nurses, public health experts, and advocates who are all committed to advancing our understanding of these diseases and improving the lives of those affected. The institute's work extends beyond Australian borders with significant global partnerships, such as collaborations with the World Health Organization and various regional and Commonwealth entities.

During the visit, the Governor-General and Mr Beckett had the opportunity to learn about these vital partnerships and the impact they are making in the quest for better diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. They also heard the inspiring story of Paul and Carmella Signiorelli, who have generously donated millions of dollars to the Commonwealth Mesothelioma Alliance via the Biaggio Signorelli Foundation. This donation is a poignant tribute to Paul's father and a testament to their dedication to finding a solution to the ongoing health crisis caused by asbestos and dust exposure.

The commitment and contributions of individuals like the Signorellis, along with the unwavering work of the ADDRI team, are essential in the pursuit of a world where these preventable diseases no longer cause suffering. The visit underscores the importance of ongoing research and the collaborative approach necessary to combat these diseases effectively. The Governor-General's patronage and the efforts of the Biaggio Signorelli Foundation serve as powerful reminders of the collective responsibility to support institutions like ADDRI, which are dedicated to changing the future of treatment and care for those affected by asbestos and dust-related illnesses.
