Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo, a defender for Club Nacional, tragically passed away on August 27, 2024, at the age of 27. His death occurred five days after he collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match against São Paulo on August 22. Izquierdo suffered from cardiac arrhythmia during the match, which led to his collapse in the 84th minute. He was immediately treated on the field and later hospitalized in São Paulo, where his condition worsened despite intensive care.

Izquierdo had a history of a minor cardiac arrhythmia diagnosed at the age of 17, but it did not prevent him from pursuing a professional football career. He played for several clubs in Uruguay and briefly in Mexico. After his collapse, he was placed on mechanical ventilation and developed severe neurological complications, which ultimately led to his death.

The football community, including prominent figures like Luis Suárez and Diego Forlán, expressed their deep sorrow and offered condolences to Izquierdo's family.
