Bilikesu Olagunju, a 42-year-old caregiver from the UK, was caught on camera subjecting an 88-year-old dementia patient, John Attard, to a disturbing incident of abuse in his home in Bexley, Kent. The horrific footage showed Olagunju stripping the elderly man, verbally abusing him, and threatening to physically harm him, while he was crying out in pain and distress.

John Attard's family had installed the hidden camera in his house due to their suspicions regarding his treatment. The footage captured Olagunju's cruel actions, which included her aggressively handling him, making him sit on a chair without any consideration for his comfort, and ignoring his pleas for her to stop as she caused him pain.

Olagunju was brought to justice following the discovery of the video evidence. She was taken to court and pleaded guilty to the charge of ill treatment or wilful neglect of a vulnerable adult. The court acknowledged the severity of her actions, and she was sentenced to six weeks in prison. However, this sentence was suspended for 18 months, which means she will not serve the time in jail unless she commits another offense during this period. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work.

The suspended sentence and community service were met with criticism from some quarters, with people arguing that the punishment was not severe enough for the cruel treatment inflicted on the vulnerable elderly man. The case highlights the importance of monitoring and protecting individuals who are in the care of others, especially those who are unable to communicate their suffering effectively due to conditions like dementia. It also underscores the need for stricter oversight and regulation in the care industry to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
