The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a former Nigerian international football player, Segun George Hunkarin, along with his accomplice, Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, for an attempted smuggling of cocaine into the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Chinedu, a businessman known for his frequent trips between Turkey and Nigeria, was caught with 37 wraps of cocaine weighing 800 grams hidden in his carry-on luggage upon his arrival at the Lagos airport. He had reportedly traveled from Turkey and transited in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he acquired the illicit substance before continuing his journey.

The NDLEA's investigation led them to Hunkarin, who was waiting in the airport carpark to collect the drug consignment from Chinedu. The ex-footballer had spent time playing professionally in Brazil and admitted to having trafficked drugs twice between Brazil and Ethiopia in the past but denied ever bringing any drugs into Nigeria.

Both suspects are currently in NDLEA custody and are undergoing further interrogation regarding their roles in the drug smuggling ring and any potential connections to other members. The agency's swift action underscores its commitment to curbing the flow of narcotics into the country, even when it involves high-profile individuals from the sports world.
