Danielle Smith, the Alberta premier, is adopting a cooperative approach with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney regarding the construction of new oil pipelines, particularly to the west coast, despite their differing views on the issue. 

While Carney has suggested that consensus among provinces is necessary for pipeline approvals, which could potentially give British Columbia a veto power over Alberta's proposed pipeline projects, Smith remains optimistic. She believes that by demonstrating the national interest in the project, she can gain approval and is willing to work with B.C.

NDP Premier David Eby to achieve this. Smith is playing a careful political game, recognizing the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the federal government while advocating for her province's interests. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, on the other hand, is more confrontational, questioning Carney's commitment to pipeline construction and advocating for decisive action. The dynamics between the two leaders and their respective positions on energy policy will likely continue to unfold as pipeline discussions progress.
