Democracy Day: Tinubu awards 139 National Honours for the exceptional contributions of heroes.

June 12, 2025 - President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honors on a list of 139 individuals for their outstanding contributions to the country's democracy. Among the recipients are the late Chief Moshood Abiola, a former NEC chair, and Prof. Humphrey Nwosu. The honors were presented during President Tinubu's June 12 address to the National Assembly in Abuja.

The posthumous national honors were given to figures such as Shehu Musa Yar'Adua (GCFR), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu (CON), Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (CON), Alhaji Balarabe Musa (CFR), Pa. Alfred Rewani (CFR), and others. The list also includes prominent living recipients like Prof. Wole Soyinka (GCON), journalist Dapo Olorunyomi (CON), and human rights activist Femi Falana (CON).

President Tinubu also used the occasion to announce the granting of a presidential pardon to the 'Ogoni Nine', recognizing their significant role in the struggle for environmental justice. The national honors are a demonstration of the government's appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions made by these individuals towards the advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
