Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that without his intervention, "really bad things" would have already occurred to Russia as a result of its actions in Ukraine. This statement comes after one of the most intense Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine, which involved the use of drones.

On May 27, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, suggesting that he has been protecting Russia from severe consequences due to his efforts to maintain a relationship with Vladimir Putin. He warned that if not for his actions, the situation could have been much worse for Moscow. This is in response to the increased pressure on the U.S. to take a stronger stance against Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Russia launched a significant aerial and drone assault on Ukraine on May 26, which was the most extensive drone strike in the ongoing full-scale war. The attack killed six people and injured 24 across various regions of the country. Despite this, Trump had a two-hour call with Putin where the latter refused to agree to a full ceasefire.

Trump's reluctance to impose new sanctions on Russia, citing the need to keep the peace negotiation channels open, has been met with skepticism from Ukraine and its supporters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for more urgent sanctions, saying that the lack of international pressure is only emboldening Putin.

In the U.S., a bipartisan sanctions bill is in the works, which includes severe financial penalties and tariffs for countries purchasing Russian oil or uranium. The European Union and U.S. lawmakers have also called for stronger measures against Russia in light of its continued military actions in Ukraine.
