Five bodies were discovered around the Rimpfischhorn mountain, a 4,199-meter (13,776-foot) peak located east of Zermatt, not far from the Italian border. The mountain is well-known for its backcountry skiing opportunities. The victims were found following a search operation that was triggered when abandoned skis were spotted near the summit on Saturday. The identities of the deceased are being determined, and an investigation into the incident has been opened by Swiss authorities.

In another tragic event, a 29-year-old climber succumbed to an avalanche on the Morgenhorn in the Bern region. Two additional climbers were caught in the same avalanche but were successfully rescued with only minor injuries. They have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Switzerland's rugged terrain and winter conditions frequently pose risks to outdoor enthusiasts. The Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanches reported that from October 1, 2024, to May 17, 2025, 15 people have died in avalanches throughout the country. In March 2024, six backcountry skiers, including five members of a single family, perished after being trapped in a severe storm in the vicinity of Zermatt.
