For the past 40 years, Calgary Transit's Duewag U2 C-Trains have been carrying Calgarian commuters across Calgary Transit's entire LRT network. Now the question you might ask, "What is it that makes these trains so historical?" to answer that question, let's do a bit of time travel back to the 1980s.

The story of the C-Trains began was 43 years ago when the Calgary Transit's C-Train line started operations in 1981, with 20 Duewag U2 C-Train cars shipped all the way overseas from where they were built in Hamburg, Germany.

After 30 years in service, the beginning of the end for the U2s came in 2016, when the Siemens S200 or Mask C-Train cars first made their appearance and made their first revenue run in the summer of 2016. According to those CT C-Train operators that have worked on the U2 Trains for long periods of time, the bad began to outweigh the good. Essentially this meant that Calgary Transit could no longer find or custom make the parts they needed to repair the units, as unfortunately, the parts for these trains are now out of production.

Sadly, the Fleet of Calgary Transit U2 C-Trains has shrunk bit by bit, year after year, and those that are left are only running out the clock, postponing their inevitable fade with the scrappers' torch!!!

As of June 2024, Calgary Transit has announced their plans to begin the complete retirement of these Calgary Classics by December 2024!!!!

A couple of hours ago, I visited Calgary Transit's LRT Garage facility at McKnight-Westwinds and I asked my friend who is a C-Train trainer, at Calgary Transit if they could consider donating one of their Duewag U2 C-Train cars to Heritage Park in Calgary, Alberta and place it on static display alongside Heritage Drive next to our very own streetcar line. As a matter fact, they even know many of our own bus drivers at Heritage Park right now. And many of Calgary Transit's current C-Train trainers said they used to run the streetcars at
Heritage Park! It will be an example of history that all future generations would enjoy! And if you would like to support that, perfect!!! But if not, they will still be remembered through photographs and film, captured by the many railfans that adore the units. Not a valid attachment ID.
