Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, made this announcement during a quarterly press briefing coinciding with the start of World Vaccination Week, aimed at evaluating the agency's progress. Dr. Aina highlighted that the agency has made significant strides over the past year, particularly in utilizing technology to enhance healthcare delivery, including the introduction of a live dashboard to monitor primary healthcare centers across various wards in Nigeria.
Furthermore, he reported that 120,000 healthcare workers have undergone retraining, and emergency services have been bolstered with the distribution of ambulances nationwide. In terms of maternal care, Dr. Aina mentioned the initiation of a maternal and neonatal mortality reduction initiative in 172 local government areas across five states, aimed at decreasing maternal fatalities.
Regarding vaccination efforts, he noted a 54% improvement, with seven states experiencing enhancements, and a total of 26 million children vaccinated to date. Additionally, 101,158 children have received malaria vaccinations in four states. Dr. Aina also announced the launch of a new polio vaccination campaign set to begin on May 3 in several northern states, as part of a synchronized vaccination initiative with Lake Chad countries, targeting 83 million children for immunization against polio.
