Beginning August 1, the Federal Government will enforce stringent penalties for individuals who overstay their visas, which include:

- A daily fine of $15 commencing from the date of visa expiration
- A 5-year entry ban for overstays exceeding 6 months
- A 10-year ban for overstays surpassing 1 year

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced these regulations in Lagos during the launch of a new Expatriate Administration System designed to enhance immigration oversight and improve data accuracy.

Additionally, starting May 1, the ministry will introduce:
- Automated Landing/Exit Cards
- An Electronic Visa system

- A revised Expatriate Quota system

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of obtaining precise data on foreign nationals, highlighting that current statistics do not accurately reflect the situation.
