Microsoft has announced that Skype will officially close on May 5, 2025. This decision marks the end of an era for the video-calling service that has been a staple in online communication for over two decades. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and has since integrated it into various platforms, including Xbox and Windows devices.

The company has decided to retire Skype to focus on its flagship videoconferencing platform, Microsoft Teams. Users will be able to use their existing Skype accounts to log into Teams, where they can continue their conversations and access many of the same features, such as one-on-one calls, group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Teams also offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities for free.

During the transition period, Skype users can choose to migrate their data to Teams or export their chat history, contacts, and call logs. Microsoft has assured users that Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, giving them ample time to explore Teams and decide on the best option for their needs.

The decision to shut down Skype is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to streamline its communication services and adapt to customer needs. While the news may be disappointing for long-time Skype users, Microsoft hopes that the transition to Teams will provide a more modern and integrated communication experience.
