Ramadan 2025 is dominated by a unique celestial phenomena that only happens once every 33 years. Find out when Saudi Arabian Muslims will start fasting after seeing the moon. In 2025, the first day of Ramadan (often called Ramzan, Ramzaan, or Ramazan) will fall on March 1st, a rare coincidence between the Gregorian calendar and the Hijri or Islamic lunar calendar. This rare synchronization, which only happens once every 33 years, is evidence of the complex interaction between the solar and lunar cycles, according to Eng. Majed Abu Zahra, President of the Jeddah Astronomical Society.  The Hijri calendar is based on the lunar cycle or phases of the moon, as opposed to the well-known Gregorian calendar, which has 365 (or 366 in a leap year) days and tracks the Earth's orbit around the sun. Since the crescent moon is sighted at the start of each Hijri month, the Islamic year is 10–12 days shorter than the solar year. Because of this, the Hijri calendar's months progressively change with the seasons, finishing a full cycle around every three decades. Because of this ongoing trend, the beginning of Ramadan—a holy month of prayer, fasting, and the first of Ramadan and March 1st fall on different dates in the Gregorian calendar every year, but in 2025, an extraordinary astronomical alignment will bring them together in perfect harmony. The beauty of astronomical precision According to Abu Zahra, this rare moment highlights the remarkable mathematical precision in the movements of the moon and Earth. "Such synchronization does not occur often, but it returns in a similar way approximately every 33 years, albeit in different months," he explained. This alignment serves as a fascinating reminder that time is not a fixed concept but rather a fluid concept shaped by the natural rhythms of the universe and the same celestial mechanics. Muslims in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will prepare to see the crescent of the holy month of Ramadan on Friday evening, February 28, 2025, which is equivalent to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar. Although the Saudi Arabian moon sighting committee typically watches the moon in the days preceding the anticipated start date of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the Kingdom are encouraged to see the moon themselves, whether through binoculars or another method. If the crescent moon is seen on Friday evening, the taraweeh prayers will start that evening, and Muslims in Saudi Arabia will start fasting on Saturday, March 01, 2025. The holy month in Saudi Arabia will begin on Sunday, March 02, 2025, rather than on Friday after Maghrib or evening prayers. In the Kingdom, anyone who witnesses the Ramadan crescent moon with their unaided eyes or with binoculars should report the sighting to the local court and provide a statement there.
If someone sees the Ramadan crescent, they can also get in touch with the closest centre, which will help them get to the closest court to report the sighting. A moment of contemplation This unusual alignment has a deeper, even poetic significance that goes beyond its scientific fascination. It serves as a reminder that, like the cycles of life itself, time is both interrelated and constantly changing. This special day provides a chance for individuals who observe Ramadan to consider not just spiritual rejuvenation but also on the wonders of the cosmos that govern our daily lives. So, as March 1, 2025, and the first of Ramadan 1446 coincide, take a moment to appreciate this extraordinary of time and tradition—one that won't happen again for another 33 years.
