  •   France's  far-right  Rassemblement  Nationale  (RN)  failed to win a majority in the parliamentary elections, according to exit polls,  contradicting  many political  observers.  Expectations
 
  •   Initial  forecasts  point  to  a victory for the left-wing  New Popular Front (NFP)  alliance.
 
  •   RN leader Jordan Bardella said France had been  "stripped"  of  its  rights;  of  a  national  rally  victory and  was  heading  towards  "uncertainty  and  instability";
 
  •   President Macron is  analyzing  the results, the  Elysée  Palace said in a statement, and is not expected to comment  this  evening.
 
  •   This was the second round of  France's  early  parliamentary  elections,  which Macron suddenly called a month  ago.
 
  •   After the National Rally did well in the first round last week,  left-wing  or centrist candidates  withdrew from the race  in  many  places,  a tactical move to  concentrate  the  anti-RN  vote  on  a  single  candidate.
 
  •   The election took place in a tense atmosphere, with 30,000 police deployed across  France.
 
  •   The picture  is  becoming  clearer as  the  actual results come  in.
