The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had a harrowing experience yesterday when Israeli air strikes hit Sana'a International Airport in Yemen, where he was present. A crew member of the UN flight he was about to board was injured in the attack ¹ ².

Dr. Tedros was leading a high-level UN delegation to Yemen to discuss the humanitarian situation and negotiate the release of detained UN staff. The delegation had just concluded its meetings and was preparing to depart when the air strikes occurred ¹.

The Israeli air strikes targeted several locations in Yemen, including the airport, Red Sea ports, and power stations. The attacks resulted in numerous casualties, with at least three people killed and dozens injured ¹ ².

Dr. Tedros described the close call, saying that the air traffic control tower, departure lounge, and runway were damaged, and the crew member was injured. He and his team were fortunate to escape unharmed ² ³.

The UN Secretary-General has condemned the escalation of violence between Yemen and Israel, emphasizing the need for international law to be respected and for civilians and humanitarian personnel to be protected ¹ ⁴.

The situation in Yemen remains dire, with millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN is calling for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation ¹ ⁴.
