After 12 states had previously joined the alliance, Alberta became the first non-U.S. state to join the U.S. energy pact.

Along with President-elect Donald Trump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith made the announcement Thursday, personally thanking New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry for the invitation. Smith also expressed gratitude to the other ten governors who participated.

As the biggest supplier of natural gas and crude oil to the US, Smith said Alberta plays a critical role in ensuring the energy security of North America.

"With 200 billion barrels of oil that can be recovered, 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that can be recovered, substantial natural gas liquids, and enough of pore space for carbon capture, As we seek to expand our pipeline capacity to our best friend and ally, the United States, in collaboration with the Trump Administration and other U.S. partners, Alberta's contribution is expected to climb even more," Smith said. "We are honoured to work with this group of allies to improve energy affordability, security, and dependability for Americans and Canadians."

The Keystone XL Pipeline, a project that could deliver up to 830,000 barrels of Alberta oil per day to the United States and generate $30 billion in tax and royalties in addition to $2.4 billion for Canada's GDP, has come back into the spotlight since Trump's reelection.

Currently, Alberta supplies more oil to the US than Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Mexico combined, making up 56% of all oil imports.

According to Landry, the agreement's Enhancing and safeguarding energy security is a shared objective among members, which he claimed will result in reduced energy expenses, improved dependability, sustainable economic growth, and prudent environmental and energy resource management."As the leader of a fellow energy-producing province that, like my state, is under a federal system of government where national imperatives are not always aligned with state or provincial interests, I welcome Premier Smith and the insights she will bring," Landry said. With $188 billion in bilateral commerce in 2023, the US is Alberta's biggest trading partner. In 2023, more than 80% of Alberta's exports to the US, or around $133.6 billion, were energy products. In terms of renewable energy and emissions reduction technologies, Alberta is a world leader."The province has According to Alberta's press release, the country has the capacity to assist the United States in creating new supply chains and infrastructure for upcoming energy markets in the fields of hydrogen, renewable energy, small modular reactors, and other areas. It has also captured approximately 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide through carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology. The Governor of Louisiana released a press release outlining the objectives of the recently renamed Governors' Coalition for Energy Security. The press release states that they are to "limit costly energy mandates, minimize permitting and other regulatory barriers, ensure families and businesses have the right to choose the energy they need, focus on affordability and reliability of energy infrastructure, and coordinate to positively manage energy resources and the environment."Bill Morneau, a former Liberal finance minister, just urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to start giving defence, technology, and energy more priority and to reevaluate his current policies, including as the oil and gas cap.In a separate statement released on Friday, Smith stated that she and Alberta will fortify energy trade on their own and that she will not wait for the Liberals to do so."We're prepared to collaborate with our partners in the United States, particularly @realDonaldTrump, to make sure that Alberta's energy sector continues to be a pillar of North America's prosperity," Smith stated. "Alberta's resources are essential to economic expansion, energy security, and the close relationships that bind our nations. Because the United States prospers when Alberta prospers, we can work together to create a future that benefits both sides of the border. Together, let's fuel that future.
Louisiana, New Hampshire, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Dakota, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Virginia are among the 12 states that have signed the energy deal.
