After receiving more than 150 complaints, Calgary police released a media statement on Saturday reminding citizens of the regulations pertaining to personal pyrotechnics.Not a valid attachment ID.

Within the city limits, "pyrotechnics and fireworks are strictly prohibited unless handled by certified and trained professionals with a valid fireworks permit," the statement stated.

According to police, a large number of the instances that were recorded were thought to be related to the festivals of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.

Community safety inspector Bartosz Wilostowski stated, "The sheer volume of calls and the resources required to manage them is concerning, even though we appreciate the cultural significance of these events."
Officials had to think about closing an operational runway due of the pyrotechnics being set close to the airport, according to the police.

"Our communities' safety is of utmost importance, as is the safety of those who fly and operate in the region. Insp. Garth Kowalyk of the Calgary police department stated, "We will take the lead in education, but we will also enforce those who are blatantly endangering others."

Many of the individuals the police met with regarding their fireworks were unaware that they were breaking a bylaw.

According to Wlostowski, "pets and residents are both disturbed by fireworks, which causes stress during the entire time that the fireworks are set off."

"In order to coordinate our response and exchange information regarding businesses selling fireworks, which is also illegal in the city, our community service peace officers are collaborating closely with business safety peace officers."

They went on to say that using fireworks without an authorization is against the National Fire Code (Alberta) and regulations, which can result in penalties or prosecution.

The following are among the fireworks-related bylaws and penalties:

 possessing, selling, or using pyrotechnics or fireworks without a Calgary Fire Department permission is prohibited;
 Significant penalties might be imposed on violators, such as: $500 minimum fine for possessing fireworks without a permit; $250 minimum fee for using fireworks without a permit; and $250 minimum fine for selling fireworks without a permit.
"Restricting the usage of fireworks in Calgary is necessary to ensure everyone's safety. To reduce possible fallout, fireworks need to be handled carefully and in a safe, non-flammable location, according to Pete Steenaerts, deputy chief of risk management for the Calgary Fire Department. "It is imperative that all Calgarians abide by these rules and leave fireworks to the experts, especially considering our arid climate."

Please call 311 if you would like to report the use of fireworks.
