Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to embark on a significant visit to Mexico City, Mexico, from September 18 to 19, 2025. The key areas of focus for this meeting will include security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade. This visit follows a series of earlier meetings, including the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, where Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum initially discussed strengthening their countries' relationship. Additionally, Canadian ministers Anand and Champagne visited Mexico in August, laying the groundwork for Prime Minister Carney's trip.

The Canadian government is actively seeking to diversify and strengthen its trade relationships with reliable partners, with the ultimate goal of creating high-paying jobs, growing industries, securing new markets, and establishing more resilient supply chains. As Prime Minister Carney emphasized, "Canada and Mexico have a robust relationship built on over three decades of free trade. In light of a changing global environment, we aim to strengthen our partnerships in trade, commerce, security, and energy. Together, we will enhance supply chains, create new opportunities for workers, and ensure greater prosperity and security for both Canadians and Mexicans."

The relationship between Canada and Mexico has a long history, with the two countries celebrating 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2024. Trade and investment between the two nations are on the rise, with nearly $56 billion in two-way merchandise trade recorded in the previous year. Furthermore, Canada and Mexico, along with the United States, are set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be the largest tournament in FIFA history. In 2024, Canada was Mexico's fifth-largest merchandise trading partner, while Mexico ranked as Canada's third-largest single-country merchandise trading partner. Prime Minister Carney's visit to Mexico City is a testament to the significance of this bilateral relationship and the potential for future growth and cooperation between the two nations.
