The recent developments surrounding Oba Joseph Oloyede, the Apetu of Ipetumodu town, have necessitated swift action from the Osun State Government. Following the traditional ruler's prison sentence in the United States for orchestrating a scheme to exploit COVID-19 emergency loan programs, Governor Ademola Adeleke has addressed the situation.

During the State Executive Council meeting on Friday, Adeleke instructed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to take necessary steps regarding the imprisoned monarch. This directive comes in response to requests from some residents of Ipetumodu, who are seeking the appointment of a new monarch to fill the vacant position.

In a statement, the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, noted that the governor views the situation as unfortunate and emphasized the need for prompt action. The U.S. District Judge, Christopher A. Boyko, had ordered Oba Oloyede to serve a three-year supervised release after his imprisonment and pay $4,408,543.38 in restitution.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio reported that Oloyede's scheme involved exploiting COVID-19 emergency loan programs designed to assist struggling businesses. Since the ruling, the town of Ipetumodu has experienced a tense atmosphere, with some princes urging the state government to make a decision regarding the replacement of Oba Oloyede.

However, certain kingmakers have opposed the call for replacing the king, creating a complex situation that requires careful consideration from the state government. The Osun State Government's decision will likely be guided by the need to maintain stability and respect for traditional institutions, while also upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the town's governance is not compromised by the monarch's imprisonment. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the state government will balance these competing interests and arrive at a solution that serves the best interests of the people of Ipetumodu.
