The Duchess of Kent has died at the age of 92, as announced by Buckingham Palace.


She passed away peacefully at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family. In response, flags at royal residences, including Buckingham Palace, have been lowered to half-mast.

Katharine, the duchess, was the oldest member of the Royal Family and was married to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, who was a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II. She was a well-known presence at the Wimbledon tennis championships, where she presented trophies and consoled players, notably offering support to a tearful Jana Novotna in 1993.
