The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified efforts to combat environmental degradation in the state by conducting raids on unlicensed waste collectors, known as cart pushers, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The operation specifically targeted areas around Iyana Iba, Volkswagen, and Ojo Barracks, where these individuals have been accused of indiscriminate dumping and non-compliance with environmental laws.

The Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team of LAWMA carried out the operation to ensure that only registered and authorized waste collectors operate in the state. This action is in line with the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards environmental offenses and the effort to maintain cleanliness and sanitation across Lagos. The raids aim to enforce the regulations and standards set by the government and to encourage proper waste management practices among residents and businesses.

By cracking down on these illegal activities, LAWMA hopes to improve the overall health and well-being of the population, reduce the incidence of diseases, and promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The operation also serves as a deterrent to other potential offenders and underscores the importance of adhering to waste management laws in the state.

Lagos State continues to face challenges with waste management, and the involvement of unregulated waste collectors can exacerbate these issues. The state government has been working on various initiatives to enhance waste collection and disposal systems, including the introduction of the PSP (Private Sector Participation) model, which involves the participation of registered private waste operators to complement the efforts of LAWMA.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to report any illegal waste collection activities to LAWMA and to only engage the services of licensed waste collectors. The agency remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and creating a cleaner, healthier Lagos for all.
