"Today, August 24, marks a significant milestone in Ukraine's history – the 34th anniversary of its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. As Canada was one of the first countries to recognize Ukraine's sovereignty, our nations have cultivated a strong and enduring relationship built on shared values of peace, security, and democracy.

The Ukrainian-Canadian community, with over one million strong, is a testament to the deep connection between our countries. As a result, events in Ukraine resonate deeply within Canada. Our country remains committed to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and national objectives, and we continue to provide robust assistance to aid in its defense and growth.

In light of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine is in urgent need of additional military equipment to protect its citizens and territorial integrity. In response, Canada is providing $2 billion in support for drones, armored vehicles, and other essential resources to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.

As I arrive in Kyiv, Ukraine, I am reminded of the importance of our collective efforts towards achieving a lasting and fair peace for the Ukrainian people. On this Ukrainian Independence Day, Canada reaffirms its commitment to enhancing its support for Ukraine, recognizing the country's unwavering dedication to freedom and sovereignty. Together, we will continue to work towards a brighter future for Ukraine and its people."
