PDP Governors Unite Against Wike, Insist on National Convention

In a bold move, governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have resolved to proceed with the November 15th and 16th elective National Convention, slated to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State. This decision was reached during a meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State Capital on Saturday, where the governors reaffirmed their commitment to the resolutions of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of July 2025 regarding the National Convention.

The governors' stance comes amidst statements attributed to former Governor of Rivers State and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who claimed not to be aware of the convention and refused to recognize the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where the decision was made. Wike has vowed to disrupt the peace in the party unless the South-South Congress conducted by his allies, which produced Dan Orbih and was rejected by the NWC, is recognized.

However, the PDP governors, led by Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the Forum, have declared their support for the Ambassador Umar Damagum-led leadership of the party. In a communiqué read to journalists, the governors urged members to resist attempts to derail the convention by anti-party forces, emphasizing the need to see the PDP as the only democratic institution and viable alternative for restoring Nigeria along the path of good governance and national development.

The governors also expressed gratitude to members and supporters of the PDP for their loyalty in the face of intimidation and anti-democratic actions by the APC-led Federal Government in the recent by-election. They commended the resilience of PDP leaders and members in overcoming orchestrated defections, stressing that such distractions cannot diminish the party's strong grassroots appeal or the growing public yearning for the return of affordable living and relative security experienced under PDP-led administrations.

Furthermore, the Forum called on members and supporters of the party and Nigerians to hold fast to the vision and principles of the PDP, despite the growing intimidation of the opposition by the government in power. They urged Nigerians to be more circumspect in protecting their votes, citing the over-militarization of the recent bye-elections characterized by widespread irregularities, vote-buying, and violence.

On the issue of insecurity, the PDP governors commended the initiatives of the Zamfara State Government in significantly curbing insecurity within the state. However, they condemned the continued monstrous killings in Katsina, Plateau, Niger, and Benue States and other parts of the country, calling on the federal government to be more responsive to the lives and properties of the citizenry.

In conclusion, the PDP governors have sent a strong message that they will not be swayed by internal conflicts or external pressures, and are determined to move forward with the National Convention, which they believe is crucial for the party's growth and development.
