A devastating wildfire burning along the northern shore of Cameron Lake, east of Port Alberni, has rapidly grown to nearly 1,000 acres in size. As of today, the province has issued an air quality warning for the central Island, affecting areas east of Port Alberni, due to the massive blaze. The evacuation order initially issued remains in place, with an eviction alert in effect for the community situated east of the lake.

Investigations have revealed that the wildfire is human-caused, prompting a swift response from the BC Wildfire Service. A force of over 60 personnel, supported by five helicopters and heavy machinery, is battling the wildfire. Additionally, structure protection crews have been deployed to safeguard nearby properties.

Residents in the vicinity of Cameron Lake are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders, as the situation remains precarious. The BC Wildfire Service is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. In the meantime, locals and visitors are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize exposure to poor air quality.
