Located in the heart of East Africa, South Sudan is one of the countries most vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change. In areas like Bentiu, flooding is not just a seasonal challenge, but a daily threat to the very survival of its residents. The situation is dire, with record rainfalls predicted, putting the lives and livelihoods of thousands at risk.

In response to this crisis, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has taken proactive measures to mitigate the effects of flooding. A team of skilled peacekeeping engineers from Pakistan has been deployed to intensively monitor existing floodwater levels and raise the levels of dykes, ensuring the protection of 300,000 residents, including thousands living in displacement camps. The team's efforts are concentrated on safeguarding the community from the 4,500 square kilometers of stagnant waters that pose a constant threat to their lives and livelihoods.

As the situation continues to unfold, the UNMISS remains committed to supporting the people of South Sudan in their fight against climate change.
