Tanzania and Russia Embark on Ambitious $1.2 Billion Uranium Venture

In a significant move aimed at bolstering its mining sector, Tanzania has officially launched a massive $1.2 billion uranium mining and processing project in collaboration with Russia's state-owned nuclear energy giant, Rosatom. This landmark partnership marks one of the largest foreign investments in Tanzania's mining industry to date.

The project, located in the Mkuju River area of the Namtumbo District in the southern region of Ruvuma, is poised to generate significant economic growth and job opportunities for the local population. The mine is estimated to create over 4,000 direct jobs, with an additional 100,000 indirect opportunities emerging across sectors such as logistics, energy, and infrastructure.

The Mkuju River deposit, with an estimated 58,500 tonnes of uranium reserves, is set to become a key player in the global uranium market. Once fully operational, the mine is expected to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of uranium annually over a 22-year lifespan, catapulting Tanzania into the top 10 uranium producers worldwide.

This strategic partnership not only underscores Tanzania's commitment to diversifying its economy but also highlights the country's potential to become a significant player in the global energy landscape.
