Tsunamis are most often caused by underwater earthquakes. Climate change is making them worse.

A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale hit off the coast of Russia on Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings throughout a large portion of the Pacific. Tsunamis, which can produce waves taller than 100 feet (30.5 meters), have the potential to inflict significant damage—and their severity is increasing due to climate change.
