A Pakistani national was detained in Canada and accused of preparing a terrorist

A citizen of Pakistan has been detained in Canada on suspicion of arranging a terrorist strike in New York City.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, also known as Shazeb Jadoon, lived in Canada and tried to enter the United States to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.



According to U.S. authorities, Khan was taken into custody by Canadian police on September 4 close to the border in Quebec. Khan travelled in three different cars from inside or near Toronto before being apprehended in Ormstown, Quebec, around 20 kilometres from the border with the United States. Both the car's driver and the other female passenger are still unidentified.

On September 13, Khan is expected to appear in court in Montreal.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated in a statement on X(opens in a new tab) that the arrest was the result of the RCMP and FBI's close cooperation.

"Jewish Canadians and Jewish Americans deserve to be safe in their communities," LeBlanc said. "Canada will never tolerate hate, violent extremism or terrorism."

Jews in Canada founded B'nai Brith nonprofit group, said in a statement(opens in a new tab) that it had been informed by federal and law enforcement agencies about the arrest on Friday night. According to the statement, Khan was living in Canada with a student visa.

"Our government must act immediately to prevent the entry into Canada of those who harbour radical views and to prevent the further radicalization of its citizens," the organization warned. "Terrorists are using Canada as a breeding ground. There are no justifications left. Our country's safety and security must always come first."

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in an email to TVNews.ca that it does not comment on ongoing investigations or specific cases, so it would not confirm Khan's status there.

According to the RCMP, additional domestic partners instrumental in the arrest included CSIS, Peel Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police and the Canada Border Services Agency.

Khan was arrested under the Criminal Code for attempting to leave Canada to commit an offence for a terrorist group, participating in the activities of a terrorist group and conspiracy to commit an offence by violating U.S. immigration law.
