Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's Ocean Mode Transforms Underwater Photography for Coral Restoration

Samsung Electronics has reached a significant milestone in its "Galaxy for the Planet" initiative by marking the one-year anniversary of its collaboration with Seatrees, a non-profit organization dedicated to marine ecosystem restoration. The partnership has been instrumental in employing advanced technology to restore damaged coral reefs, highlighting the company's broader commitment to the health of the world's oceans.

The Coral in Focus program was introduced at Galaxy Unpacked in January 2025 and has made a substantial impact on local communities in Fiji, Indonesia, and the United States. The initiative is part of Samsung's larger environmental vision, which aims to create a more sustainable future. One of the key innovations is the Ocean Mode1 feature, exclusively available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone. This cutting-edge camera technology has been pivotal in supporting underwater research and conservation efforts.

Ocean Mode allows for the vivid capture of coral reef images, addressing the challenge of excessive blue tones and motion blur typically experienced in underwater photography. By providing marine researchers with precise visual data, they are able to create detailed 3D photogrammetry models of coral reefs. These models are essential for monitoring and analyzing coral health and growth, which in turn, informs targeted restoration efforts.

The collaboration has yielded remarkable results. The high-quality images captured by Ocean Mode have contributed to the creation of 17 3D models of coral reefs. Additionally, Samsung's efforts have facilitated the planting of 11,046 coral fragments, leading to the restoration of 10,705 square meters of coral reef habitat — an area equivalent to 25 basketball courts.

This initiative exemplifies Samsung's commitment to sustainability, which began with the integration of recycled fishing nets into the Galaxy product line in 2021. Since then, the company has extended its eco-conscious approach to various products, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearable devices. By combining innovative technology with environmental stewardship, Samsung continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the quest for a more sustainable planet.
