The recent visit by the Governor-General and Mr Beckett coincided with the launch of new books published by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which showcases the collaborative efforts to preserve and enhance Indigenous knowledge and culture. These books, co-written and illustrated by Co-Principal Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr, are a testament to the vibrant tradition of storytelling and education among the Yolŋu people. The Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre plays a crucial role in supporting over 300 local artists, providing them with a platform to share their unique perspectives and histories through various art forms such as bark paintings, larrakitj ceremonial poles, weaving, prints, and more. Additionally, the Mulka Project ensures that the sacred and vital knowledge of the Yolŋu culture is preserved and disseminated through digital media, contributing to a broader understanding and appreciation of Australia's rich cultural heritage. The exhibition of historical pieces at the Art Gallery of New South Wales further underscores the importance and relevance of Yolŋu art and governance. The event was a meaningful exchange that highlighted the enduring strength of Indigenous culture and the collaborative efforts to ensure its continued vitality and presence in contemporary Australia.
