Tokunbo Akintola's story is a poignant one. Born in 1950 to Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a prominent political figure who was the first native-born Governor-General of Western Nigeria, and Faderera Akintola, Tokunbo's early years were marked by significant moments of change in Nigeria's history.

When he was admitted to Eton College in 1964, it was a monumental step for not only him but also for Nigeria. At the time, the country was only four years post-independence from British rule, and the idea of a young Nigerian attending such a prestigious British institution was a powerful statement of intent regarding the country's desire to produce leaders capable of navigating the global stage.

Eton College, founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, has a storied history of educating future leaders of the UK and the British Empire. Its alumni include 20 British Prime Ministers and numerous other influential figures. For Tokunbo to be accepted into this institution was a clear sign that the barriers of colonialism were slowly being dismantled and that the world was beginning to recognize the potential of African students to excel in the highest echelons of education.

Sadly, Tokunbo's time at Eton was cut short when he passed away in a car accident in 1968. His death was a tragic loss not just for his family, but also for a nation that had placed great hopes in his potential.
