The United Nations and the Dutch government have decided to cancel an event focused on LGBTQ rights in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, following a warning from the Senegalese government. The event, which was organized to encourage dialogue on the rights of LGBTQ individuals, was set to take place at the Dutch embassy.

Senegal's government issued a strong objection to the event, stating that it conflicts with the nation's cultural and religious values. Homosexual acts are illegal in Senegal, with a penalty of up to five years in prison for anyone found guilty of engaging in "acts against nature" with someone of the same sex.

The Dutch foreign ministry released a statement acknowledging the country's stance on human rights and equal treatment but ultimately chose to cancel the event, citing various factors to consider. This decision comes despite efforts in 2022 to tighten anti-LGBTQ laws in Senegal being rejected by lawmakers, who argued that the existing legislation was already clear and sufficient.

The cancellation of this event highlights the ongoing tension between the advocacy for LGBTQ rights by international bodies and the societal norms and legal frameworks in many West African countries that remain conservative and intolerant towards the LGBTQ community.
